Book WorksCould you please present yourself and your activities.Established in 1984, Book Works is a commissioning organisation specialising in artists’ books and projects. Dedicated to supporting new work by emerging artists, our projects are initiated by invitation, open submission, and through guest-curated projects. Book Works consists of a publishing and commissioning department; and a studio specialising in binding, box-making and multiples. Our activities include publishing, a lecture and seminar programme, exhibitions, the development of an on-line archive, and artists’ surgeries and workshops held by both the publishing department and the studio. Book Works is funded by Arts Council England. What about the aspects of artistic independence and financial autonomy? Book Works’ funding allows us to directly commission projects that are independent of either public institutions or private galleries, and financially autonomous. Each project is funded through a combination of project grants and Book Works. We directly commission artists and writers, or enable projects with curators, realising projects that are often new, experimental or difficult, which often would not be possible with more mainstream publishers, or galleries. What about the “author/graphic designer/printer/publisher/distributor complicity” in such editorial projects?Book Works takes an editorial lead in all the projects, in a process that realises ideas in collaboration with the artist or writer, and designer. As well as supporting emerging artists, we work with new, often emerging designers on each project. We work closely with a range of printers in Europe on the production of each book. Distribution is handled by Book Works in the UK and Europe, and by RAM in the USA, and our books are available in a range of libraries, bookshops, galleries and museums. We also work closely w
